I took a week off for a vacation; it’s summer here in the U.S. and in the northeast it’s just gorgeous! Warm and sunny, and making it tough to focus on work.

Here are several more sets of words — homophones — that are the stuff of nightmares. We try so hard to write correctly, and sometimes we believe in the “magical” powers of spell check when we shouldn’t. I don’t expect us to learn the definition of every word in the dictionary, but it’s a wise writer who recognizes words that spell check accepts in error.

The only defense is to read what you’ve written — very carefully. Are the words your fingers typed the ones your mind meant?
