More Wednesday Cross Words!

Yup, finally another edition of words that I have to sometimes look up while doing the Sunday Boston Globe magazine crossword puzzle; even though the letters fit, I often have no idea about the answer! Some just never crossed my sight before seeing them in one of the puzzles.

So, let’s see how you fare in this word challenge. The words on the left are the answers that were in the crossword puzzle. The words on the right were the clues, but they’re all mixed up.

Which word goes with which clue?

UVULA……….set of stairs

HINNY…………impact sound

RIVE……………make fuzzy

STILE………….a performer

BLEAR………..part of the soft palate

MAAM…………offspring of a female donkey & a male horse

BLAM………….took too much

ODED………….elided title

BUSKER………tear apart

Ready for the answers?

UVULA………..part of the soft palate

HINNY…………offspring of a female donkey & a male horse

RIVE……………tear apart

STILE…………..a set of stairs

BLEAR…………make fuzzy

MAAM………….elided title

BLAM…………..impact sound

ODED…………..took too much

BUSKER………a performer

In case you’re not familiar with ODED, it’s usually written as OD’d or ODed. Overdosed. Yeah, I couldn’t figure it out for quite a while, either. I kept reading it as “o-ded,” which made NO sense.

And yes. I had to look up “elided.” Not a word that I’ve seen much, maybe not ever.

And remember: you have something to work with: a list of possible answers. Also, there are certainly better definitions for some of the words, but that’s just another challenge for those of us who do the puzzles. Sometimes we know the word, but the definition isn’t exactly clear.

So, how did you do? These came from several crossword puzzles over about a month, so for once I didn’t feel too dumb as I have when four or five came from the same puzzle.
