Today is Memorial Day in the U.S. I will not be posting a Monday Grammar Checkup today in honor of the day’s importance.
The picture is real. It was taken by an amateur photographer, Frank Glick, and there’s a wonderful story that goes with it.
The picture and story touched my heart — and I hope yours when you read and see — and I will always remember them. The bald eagle is American’s symbol, and for Frank Glick to have been lucky enough to snap a picture of one at a military cemetery really is amazing.
And the story is also wonderful from many perspectives. It reminds us writers of the randomness of our impact, and it also neatly ties up the picture and the gravestone the eagle sat on.
I hope we all take a moment to remember those who gave us the freedoms we enjoy — not just here in the U.S., but in all countries so blessed — and give thanks that so many fought for future generations they did not live to see.
